Child and Adolescent Wellness Workgroup

Public Group active %s

Garrett County is often the lowest county in the state for yearly adolescent well child checks. It is important for the children and adolescents of our community to be seen yearly for this preventive visit where we can ensure that these children are healthy and developing normally. Age-appropriate education and screening are also completed at a well-child visit as well as updating immunizations if needed. And, a yearly well child check can help to catch problems early, when they may be easier to treat. Let’s share ideas and collaborate on ways to increase awareness and get our adolescents in to see their doctor for a yearly preventive exam.

ABOUT

Problem Statement

The Child and Adolescent Wellness Workgroup, Chaired by Dr. Schwalm and Co-Chaired by Dr. Jennifer Corder, has collected a wealth of local data from providers on well child check utilization rates among providers in the county, beginning with a provider opinion and service utilization survey. This group has also conducted comprehensive scans for both middle and high schools on each end of the county to assess student and parent opinions on well child checks and child and adolescent health services in the county. Based on CMS data reported in the Maryland State Health Improvement Plan, Garrett County was the worst in the state for adolescent well child checks among this population (38.4%, 2017 https://opendata.maryland.gov/Health-and-Human-Services/SHIP-Adolescents-Who-Received-A-Wellness-Checkup-I/neq8-2z7a) – no other data was previously available for private/insured pay services. A previous, limited-run campaign was conducted in 2018/19 with no supplemental budget. Aim / Overall Goal / Desired Result

Project AIM:

By July 31, 2020, the Population Health, Innovation & Informatics Unit will launch a marketing campaign collaboratively designed with stakeholders to improve adolescent well child visits in Garrett County.  Our goal is that two physician offices will participate and use the marketing campaign as a coordinated approach to increase well child visits across the county while tracking the visits by each practice on a longitudinal basis utilizing the action group found here: https://mygarrettcounty.com/groups/increase-adolescent-well-child-checks/ to increase visits across  Garrett County.
