Welcome to #SurPRIZEFriday!

Welcome to #SurPRIZEFriday! We’re getting ready to kick-off the next round of Community Health Assessment processes, and we are amazed at how far Garrett County has come since the last Community Health Assessment in 2016! The launch of mygarrettcounty.com (or garrettplan.org as it started) has had a tremendous impact on the way our community works together to solve long-standing problems and collaboratively develop measurable strategies to improve health in Garrett County. To celebrate this incredible achievement and continue to move forward with this next assessment round, we’re launching #SurPRIZEFriday to share our community’s successes, prize-worthy data, and even an occasional randomly-drawn BIG prize! This week, we’re starting things off with a great prize to celebrate the closing of winter, and the beginning of a blossoming new chapter of community improvement planning and implementation. Today, we announce our first #SurPRIZEFriday winner, Bridget Shreve (@b-shreve), who’s heading into this weekend with a set of 4 lift tickets to Wisp Resort! Stay tuned for next week’s #SurPRIZEFriday, and continue to actively participate on mygarrettcounty.com to be eligible for the next prize drawing! Have a wonderful weekend from your partners in planning! @briteshell & @john

Future of Good

Local News: Student Volunteerism Leads to National Recognition and $10,000 Prize for Local Nonprofit

A local eighth grader at Southern Garrett Middle School has been nationally recognized as one of U.S. Cellular’s 16 under 16 award recipients through The Future of Good program. Caroline Argabrite received the recognition for her exceptional volunteerism at local literacy nonprofit The Reading Station, founded by beloved educator Sue Lisantti. Caroline’s contributions to supporting literacy and hands-on assistance to patrons expanded over the last year when she, along with Lisantti, introduced the program to the Garrett County Health Department’s community engagement platform on mygarrettcounty.com. The platform, also known as the Garrett County Planning Tool, was used to help promote the program, share local literacy data, and encourage others to follow in her footsteps in supporting this tremendously beneficial community service. As a result of Caroline’s contributions to promoting literacy and integrating technology to help serve the organization’s mission, The Reading Station will receive a $10,000 prize from U.S. Cellular at 5:15 pm on March 21, 2019, at the Oakland U.S. Cellular store (13180 Garrett Highway). The public is invited to attend the event, enjoy refreshments, and learn more about the organization’s efforts to promote literacy in Garrett County.
