Hi! I’m currently serving Garrett County as the Health Planner. I enjoy the collaboration aspect of my job the most, working with great people is a blessing!

Mental Health

The #1 Priority Identified In Garrett County? Mental Health – Here’s What You Need To Know

Did you know our community prioritized mental health as the number one issue in Garrett County? Does that surprise you? We collect thousands of surveys every three years and our latest results revealed some troubling needs for our community.  To make it easier to access, we’ve put together a concise information brief that connects the data available to us about mental health, the effect on a community, local leadership with contact information, local resources, campaigns, and other ways to get involved in one place, called Data Insights.   The insights are explored, problems are discussed, and solutions are brainstormed in a public meeting every month. This is the second month we’ve focused on mental health. Your input is needed to provide a community pulse and dig deeper into what is lacking in our community and find a path forward. Our next meeting is January 26; we will continue reviewing the Data Insight linked here https://garretthealth.org/data-insight-2022-a-mental-health/ as a baseline and will collectively gather more data on the issues in our community. We will use that information to brainstorm community strategies we can measure as a group. The meetings are hybrid. If you cannot join us in person at the Health Department on 1025 Memorial Drive in Oakland, please join virtually or call in.  If you don’t have time for a meeting, you can always join the discussion on mygarrettcounty.com in this action group: https://mygarrettcounty.com/groups/health-planning-council/. We want to hear from you!

Launching Data Insights: Explore The Stories Behind Our Community Priorities

There’s something new happening in Garrett County! Check out our Data Insights (https://garretthealth.org/data-insights-dashboard/), a power-packed bundle designed to spark conversations that lead to asking better questions for improved community resources.  We published our Community Health Assessment earlier this year, and the massive (3,000+ pages) can be found here: https://mygarrettcounty.com/cha2024/. The Garrett County Health Department Champions this work and both Garrett Regional Medical Center and Mountain Laurel Medical Center use the research for assessing needs in our community. It’s a vital service and we would like to use the report as a foundational piece as we build our Community Health Improvement Plan together! We’re taking the top concerns that our community identified in our Community Health Assessment and creating a Data Insight about each area; 1) Mental Health (Now Available! – https://garretthealth.org/data-insight-2022-a-mental-health/) 2) Chronic Diseases 3) Jobs, Wages & Economic Development 4) Education 5) Health Insurance 6) Aging Populations 7) Substance Abuse 8) Child & Adolescent Health 9) Environmental Health 10) Affordable Housing These comprehensive Data Insights detail our community story, the data we currently have, community services, resources, local points of contact, current coalitions/monthly meetings, and ways to take action!  We’ll kick off this new series at the Health Planning Council next week (meeting info: https://garretthealth.org/december-2022-health-planning-council-meeting-announced-w-focus-on-mental-health/). We would love for you to join us! Plus, it’s a hybrid meeting, so you can come in-person, call-in, or join via Google Meets. You are the pulse of our community, and we want to hear from you! Our first published Data Insight is written about the issue our community is most concerned about: Mental Health (Mental Health Data Insight: https://garretthealth.org/data-insight-2022-a-mental-health/). Due to the complexity of the topic, we will spend three consecutive months working together to identify the area we can collectively make the greatest impact. If you aren’t able to participate during a scheduled meeting, leave your feedback in the comments below. We look forward to working with each of you as we identify strategies based on data for our community health improvement work!

Garrett County Population Health Update – Year 5, Episode 7

We are moving into the New Year with an exciting new opportunity for our community! CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield (CareFirst), approved a competitive grant application for the Garrett County Health Department in the amount of $92,986 in response to the 2021 Place-Based Strategies: Diabetes Request for Proposals. This award is in support of the GC In Motion proposal that is all about improving access and affordability of physical activity options for more people in Garrett County! Numerous partners were written into the funding some familiar and many new! We’re joining forces with additional service organizations, clubs, and non-profits to implement some great new ideas to increase health equity! Purchases of adaptive equipment, like wheelchairs built for rocky trails, and financial awards to each of our municipalities to make improvements for access in public parks/spaces are a few of the ways we’ll be giving back. Working together to keep moving, to eat as healthy as possible, and being good friends who support one another will keep us on our wellbeing track! Ensuring more affordability and opportunities for residents to choose the healthy option, first is one way we will continue to prevent, and manage chronic diseases in Garrett County. On this final working day of 2021, on behalf of the entire team, we are grateful for all of our partners and participants! You make the work we do meaningful, thank you! Please fill out the survey for the last quarter if you haven’t already. We use this data to inform our decisions and to get more funding! (It helped us get THREE new grants this year with a focus on diabetes) https://gogarrettcounty.com/survey-3-checkpoint/ Don’t forget about the awesome opportunity for our medical community, share it with your provider! An evidenced-based self study course with free CME’s for them and free membership to the Obesity Medicine Association. Garrett County Population Health Update – Year 5, Episode 6

Opportunities abound during this autumn for the most beautiful walks of the year! Be sure to take a few extra minutes for yourself each day to enjoy the season. It’s proven that even a stroll can lift our moods and bring us more health when we do it consistently. Share your experiences, #steps, or favorite places to leaf peep with our wellbeing community during Walktober on gogarrettcounty.com!   In local public health, our mission is to promote, protect, and improve the health of individuals in Garrett County and those who visit! Shelley Argabrite, Health Strategist reminds us that health isn’t simply the absence of disease, but is a state of balance.  Health is an equilibrium of sorts that we establish in ourselves and between ourselves and our social & physical environments. (Sartorius N. The meanings of health and its promotion. Croat Med J. 2006;47(4):662-664.) To that end, the Garrett County Health Department has numerous programs and initiatives to help individuals and the community achieve the best health possible.  One of those initiatives has been creatively designed to encourage wellbeing and can be found at gogarrettcounty.com. The Population Health, Innovation, & Informatics Unit within the Garrett County Health Department seeks community champions and local resources to highlight on the platform and participants earn points for watching and interacting with the content to receive prizes that encourage healthy lifestyles. If you know of someone you would like to have highlighted on gogarrettcounty.com please email [email protected] for more information. October and November are the best times to get your flu shot! Please check out our website at garretthealth.org for the latest information on a vaccine clinic near you. Insurance providers, including Medicare Part B, will be billed as appropriate. Insurance cards should be brought to the clinic. There will be no out-of-pocket costs for the flu shot for anyone, regardless of insurance status. For more information about Garrett County community flu clinics, please visit: https://garretthealth.org/garrett-county-health-department-announces-seasonal-flu-clinic-schedule/ Finally, if you are interested in the GRMC classes mentioned in the video, you can learn more about this opportunity at: https://mygarrettcounty.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/GRMC-Promo.pdf
