Partners After School @ Accident began serving Accident Elementary School students in Garrett County, Maryland in 2002. Though funding sources and program goals have changed throughout its history, PAS @ Accident has consistently offered snack, homework assistance, health education, enrichment activities, and fieldtrip experiences- all free of charge.
The mission of PAS @ Accident for Fiscal Year 2019 is to improve the health of participants by offering healthy snacks and a minimum of 40 minutes of physical activity each day, as well as weekly health and fitness lessons.
The program currently accepts all Accident area students in second through fifth grade.

Data Narrative

Overview: Data collected seeks to answer the question, "Does a fitness and nutrition focused after school program improve student health". The Fitness Assessment documentation tool and the Fitness and Nutrition Knowledge Survey can be found in Documents.

  • Enrollment By Month- Number of students served each month. Each student is counted once within any given month, however the number count resets the next month, so the student will be counted again in that second month, and so on.
  • Total Number of Students Served- Ongoing total of students served by the program from beginning of current program year (Oct) through end of program year (May).
  • Child Wellness Checks- Based on students for whom parents answered the question both at the beginning and end of the program year. Number of students who are reported to have had a wellness checkup, compared annually from students who have data provided for both 2017-18 and 2018-19 school years. Parents self-report the information by answering the following on the application: "Did your child receive a Child Wellness Checkup (Annual checkup- not an exam due to illness) between June 2017 - May 2018? __Yes  __No", to establish the number of students who had received an Child Wellness Checkup during the 2017-18 school year.  The number of Yes answers are recorded in July 2018 column, regardless of program start date for the student.                                                                          Parents then answer the following question on the program post-survey: "Did your child receive a Child Wellness Checkup (Annual checkup- not an exam due to illness) between June 2018 - Today? __Yes  __No". The number of Yes answers are recorded in May 2019 column.                                             Dr. Jennifer Corder offered a training for parents on the importance of Child Wellness Checks in January 2019.
  • Student hours: Fitness and Nutrition Education- Number of hours students spent engaged in a fitness or nutrition lessons. For example, if 20 students were in attendance during a 30-minute nutrition lesson, the student hours would be 10 hours (20 students x 30 minutes = 600 minutes which, when divided by 60 minutes per hour, equals 10 hours).
  • Student Hours: Physical Activity- Number of hours students spent engaged in aerobic physical activity. Two 30-minute physical activity periods are offered each program day. All structured and unstructured activities must be aerobic exercise. In calculating student hours, it is assumed that students are active for 20 of the 30 available minutes, allowing for 10 minutes of non-aerobic activity such as game instructions and activity clean up. This allows for a minimum of 40 minutes of physical activity daily during program hours. When students were signed out before participating in the full physical activity periods, their minutes of physical activity were reduced accordingly in the calculation. For example, if 20 students were in attendance for the first 30-minute physical activity period and only 15 students were in attendance for the second 30-minute physical activity period, the student hours would be 11.66 hours (20 students x 20 minutes = 400 minutes, added to 15 students x 20 minutes = 300 minutes, equaling 700 minutes. When divided by 60 minutes per hour, equals 11.66 hours). PAS provides at least 40 of the 60 minutes of daily exercise recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for the ages served. https://www.cdc.gov/healthyschools/physicalactivity/
  • Parent Trainings- A minimum of two trainings, one on nutrition and another on Child Wellness Checks, will be offered to parents during the program year.
  • Fitness and Nutrition Knowledge Survey: Average Group Score- Average of all scores earned by students who completed both the pre- and post-survey. Survey instrument can be viewed in Docs.
  • Half-Mile Speed: Number completing pre- and post-runs- The number of students who had completed 1/2 mile timed runs at the beginning and the end of program year.
  • Half-Mile Speed: Number of students in previous measurement who completed the 1/2 mile run at the end of the program year (post-run) in less time than at the beginning of the program year (pre-run).
  • Body Mass Index within CDC's "Healthy Weight" range: Comprised of students who were present for measurement at both the beginning and end of the program year, the number whose BMI fell within the CDC's "Healthy Weight" range, using the CDC's BMI Calculator for Child and Teen. https://www.cdc.gov/healthyweight/bmi/calculator.html
  • Body Mass Index within CDC's "Overwight" range: Comprised of students who were present for measurement at both the beginning and end of the program year, the number whose BMI fell within the CDC's "Overweight" range, using the CDC's BMI Calculator for Child and Teen. https://www.cdc.gov/healthyweight/bmi/calculator.html
  • Body Mass Index within CDC's "Obese" range: Comprised of students who were present for measurement at both the beginning and end of the program year, the number whose BMI fell within the CDC's "Obese" range, using the CDC's BMI Calculator for Child and Teen. https://www.cdc.gov/healthyweight/bmi/calculator.html
  • Parent Hours Fitness and Nutrition Education: Number of hours parents spent engaged in a fitness or nutrition training, using the same formula as the Student Hours Fitness and Nutrition measurement.
