Project name: Peaceful Painting Date: Saturday, March 28, 2020 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM Leader: Linda Costello, Adviser for Southern Garrett High School Youth in Action Group Open to Public: No (Only for 40 student from Southern Garrett High School Student 9-12) Must RSVP by: Monday March 23, 2020 or when limit is filled. We are the Southern Garrett High School Youth in Action, Peer to Peer Education group. We are going to provide a paint event for up to 40 Southern Garrett High School Students grades 9-12. We named it Peaceful Painting cause we are going to use it as a way to reduce stress and show how art can help calm and relax the body. Art is more than just an outlet for personal expression or to pass time. It can help reduce anxiety, improve mood, increase happiness, and can also can help with depression. The National Institute of Mental Health says, "Major depression causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest". Traditional treatments are very effective for most people with depression. Alternative treatment is now getting more attention and researchers are studying the mental health benefits of creativity and crafting. So we hope that providing this art event with  painting and soft music will distract negative thoughts and emotions that may make them at a higher risk for unhealthy behaviors, (example: drugs, alcohol and suicide) and let them experience how arts and health comes together. Painting Instructor: James Michaels Peer to Peer Educators: Teresa Wolf, Alexandra Schofield, Marlysse Calling, Taylor Calling, Zhou Dong, Jalen Beeman, and Kyus Spencer. (Flyer for event coming soon!)
