WORKGROUP ON ADOLESCENT AND CHILD HEALTH

May 6, 2020

Google Meet

THOSE PRESENT:  Amber King, Susan Mills, Dr. Karl Schwalm, John Corbin, Phil Lauver, Rebecca Aiken, Shelley Argabrite, Dr. Sotiere Savopoulos, Beth Brenneman

Dr. Schwalm called the meeting to order at 8:35 a.m.  The meeting was held on Google Meet.

SURVEY

A portal was created, and then sent to Dr. Corder to review the data and scan for identifiable information (PII).  It was decided to forgo a second round of surveys.  John will email the survey information in a week or so.

GARRETT COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Dr. Schwalm asked where we are with development of an integrated health plan.  They are working with the State for the framework.  There is a new health, math, and reading series and it will work well with the information.  There is flexibility, but the State plan needs to be followed.

The new curriculum needs to be shared with providers so they can follow up on topics using the same timeline.  Providers may be willing to present in classes.

GRANTS

We are an advisory type group, and offshoot of the Health Planning Council.  There is a process of LHEC redesign, which will change the funding.  It is best to wait to explore the changes.

The Robert Woods Johnson Foundation has always been a good source, but there is nothing to apply for at this time.  Grant opportunities are listed on the GCHD website.  Most of them are for food insecurities, child maltreatment, and mental health in relation to COVID.  Another challenge is there is not a designated grant writer.

MENTAL HEALTH

The Foundation for Mind/Body Curriculum is a structured program developed by founder, James Gordon.  It is a train the trainer program using control, mindfulness, meditation, breathing, and techniques.  Karen and Becky will do an introductions at the next meeting.

With no further business to discuss, the meeting adjourned at 9:42 a.m.  The next meeting is scheduled for June 3 and will the topic will be mental health.

Respectfully Submitted,

Beth A. Brenneman
